ISI/BIS Certification for Primary Lead IS 27

BIS Certification for Primary Lead IS 27

BIS Certification for Primary Lead in India

Primary lead, the most durable material, has become the backbone for various industries because of its reliability and flexibility. This product is helpful in sectors concerned with high-quality performance. Primary lead ingots are listed under quality and specification according to Indian Standard IS 27 in India. It defines the stringent quality requirements for the material at domestic and overseas levels.

The ISI Mark Certificate is necessary for market compliance for business activities, including manufacturing, selling, and importing diverse products into the Indian market. Products are tested for compliance with safety and quality benchmarks set forth by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).BIS grants the BIS/ISI certification for products that comply with standards.

Overview of the BIS Certificate for Primary Lead IS 27

Primary leads are lead metals extracted straight from ore deposits through smelting operations, generally by roasting the sulfide ores to oxides and reducing them to metallic lead. The process has two stages: the typical procedure would be converting lead concentrate to bullion, then refining the bullion.

The primary lead industry is being pressured to develop more energy-efficient, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly methods, and to develop new markets and applications. The use of pure lead in batteries, along with cables, construction sectors, and other domains, is very significant. Lead that is not in conformance to standards produces situations that are very serious medically and damages products. This is why BIS Certification of Primary Lead is so important.

BIS Scope of Primary Lead Licensing

It lays down the requirements for primary lead ingots obtained from ore or comparable raw material. This standard is not concerned with those requirements which may relate to reclaim lead or secondary lead produced from lead scrap as raw materials through any refining process; such leads are separately dealt with in IS 3717.

BIS Quality Control Order (QCO) for Primary Lead: IS 27

The Primary Lead (Quality Control) Order, 2025, directs that all primary leads locally produced or imported must be in conformity with the Indian Standard IS 27 and must carry a BIS Standard Mark. Published by the Ministry of Mines, this order comes into force after six months from its publication in the Gazette of India. It extends its operation to all primary leads except for goods or articles meant for export.

The primary lead must conform to and be IS 27 certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards under a license granted to BIS under Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations of 2018. BIS serves as both the certifying body and enforcement authority for this order.

Key Specification of IS 27

IS 27 under BIS Certification specifies the requirements for primary lead ingots produced from ore or similar raw materials, excluding reclaimed or secondary lead. The standard sets five grades of primary lead, depending on the minimum content of lead, with specific limitations placed on contaminants such as silver, iron, copper, and bismuth.

  • Scope and Applicabilities: IS 27 covers primary lead ingots produced from ore or similar raw materials. It excludes reclaimed or secondary lead, which is covered by IS 3717.
  • Grades of Primary Lead: IS 27 defines five grades of the primary lead, based on the minimum lead content. These grades include: Pb99.90 Cu, Pb99.97, Pb99.985, Pb99.99, and Pb99.995.
  • Chemical Composition: The limit of impurities such as Ag, Fe, Cu, and Bi differs with every grade demanded. These impurities are kept in strict control so that the purity and interpretations can be ensured.

Key Steps for BIS Certification of IS 27: Primary Lead

The following are the steps to be executed for obtaining a BIS certificate for your product:

  • Registration of the organization on BIS Manakonline.
  • Filing BIS license applications online.

In the inspection or visit to your factory by the BIS inspectors, the following aspects are looked into:

Methods and Processes of Production:

  • Test instruments for finished products and quality control procedures
  • Materials handling and storage & and packaging facilities
  • Product samples are carried to a BIS-accredited laboratory for testing. The samples are tested for tensile strength, elongation, chemical resistance, and other aspects as per the IS 27 standard.
  • BIS Officer also tests in-house products and inspection documentation for conformity to the relevant specification.

Reasons why BIS Certification is compulsory for IS 27

  • To Ensure Safety of End Users: Without proper standards, lead-acid batteries have components of danger (lead, sulfuric acid) for fire, explosion, and poisoning. The BIS standards laid down ensure that batteries meet the required performance and safety benchmarks.
  • Protect Environmental/Public Health: Lead, if disposed of improperly or leaked, would cause contamination of land and water. The certification prescribes observance of environmentally safe practices.
  • Quality and Reliability: BIS certification ensures that the batteries meet basic performance standards like capacity, voltage, and durability.
  • Lowering Imports of Substandard Goods: For imports, compulsory BIS certification appears as a non-tariff barrier guarding the domestic consumers against inferior domestic or imported goods.
  • Support Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Some products under various Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, including batteries, are required to mandatorily conform to Indian Standards.
