A manhole cover is a removable plate which forms the lid over the opening of a manhole, to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and also keeping out unauthorized persons or material.

The bearing surfaces of manhole frames and covers are machined to assure flatness and prevent them from becoming dislodged by traffic.

 

Parts of Manhole Cover and Frames

1.   Covers and frames :

    1. Covers and frames shall be cleanly cast.
    2. Covers shall have on its operative top a raised chequered design to provide for an adequate no-slip grip. The rise of the chequer shall be not less than 4 mm.

BIS is a statutory institution established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,1986  to promote harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and attending to connected matters in the country.

Cast iron manhole covers and frames product has been specified in IS 1726:1991 by Bureau of Indian Standards.

SCOPE :

The standard lays down basic and performance requirements for manhole covers and frames in cast-iron, intended for use in drainage and water works.

The following Indian Standards are necessary adjuncts to this standard:

210 : 1978 Specification for grey iron castings (third revision)

4905: 1968 Methods for random sampling
