Industrial Safety Nets IS 11057

A safety net is used to protect people from injury after falling from heights by limiting the distance they fall and deflecting to dissipate the impact energy. Industrial safety nets are widely used in construction sites for people working on high-rise buildings, building maintenance, or other industries.


BIS is a statutory institution established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,1986  to promote harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and attending to connected matters in the country.


"Industrial Safety Nets product has been specified in IS 11057 : 1984 by the Bureau of Indian Standards."


SCOPE :


1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements of industrial safety nets made from man-made fibres and designed to catch personnel and/or debris falling whilst work on high buildings, and structural work of shipbuilding is being carried out: 

a) Requirements are specified for two types of safety nets; one suitable for use at maximum duty height up to 6 m and the other fora maximum duty height of 1 m. 

b) Recommendations on the care of nets are given in Appendix C.

RAW MATERIALS :


Nets shall be made from man-made Fibre ropes and and plaited cords, with the exception of polyethylene ropes and cords [Cl 3.1]. Each consignment of ropes/ plaited cords shall be received with test certificate for non- ISI marked ropes/ plaited cords. An ultraviolet stabilizer should be incorporated in the fibre [Note 2 under Cl 3.1] Safety nets and netting from which safety nets are made shall be heat set to avoid knots and/or joint slippages.


The knots (of nettings/nets) shall not change position by more than 10% average when a load of 20% of mesh (ropes/ cords) breaking strength is applied after installing a mesh on a tensile testing machine as defined in ISO 1806. The average should be calculated over readings of 3 meshes at all 4 joints of the mesh.
