BIS CERTIFICATION FOR READY MIXED PAINT, BRUSHING, WOOD PRIMER

Ready mixed paint is specially formulated to provide superior washability from skin and clothing. The paint has a smooth, creamy consistency and vivid opaque colours which are fully inter-mixable.

Wood Primer

A primer or undercoat is a preparatory coating put on materials before painting. Priming ensures better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides additional protection for the material being painted.

Bare wood is one of the more difficult substrates for topcoat adhesion. In the past, there was no substitute for a good slow-drying oil-based primer on bare wood. It takes a long time to dry, allows enough time to soak into the wood and adheres better than any other type of wood primer.

While an old fashioned oil primer is still best for this use, no one likes to wait 24 hours for the primer to dry before they can repaint it. That's why paint manufacturers have developed new, faster-drying technology in both oil-based and latex-based products that dry quickly while still helping your topcoat adhere properly.

If you don't mind waiting for a slow dry time and don't mind working with solvent cleaners, we always recommend an oil-based wood primer. If you don't want these hassles but have to paint bare wood, it's still worth using a good quality latex wood primer before applying the final coats.

Wood is very porous and will absorb the solvent in the paint and cause it to dry faster. This is undesirable because most paints undergo chemical reactions during the curing process (for example, latex and alkyd-based paints polymerize during curing), which is dependent on the slow evaporation of water or solvent. A coat of primer will prevent the underlying wood from prematurely absorbing the solvents in the final coat. Primer reduces the number of coats needed for good coverage and even color.

A thin layer of paint can still be permeable to water. Water can seep into the wood and cause warping, mold or dry rot. The primer improves the waterproofing of the surface. Primers are not used as part of a wood stain because they cover the grain of the wood. Primers differ from wood sealants in that sealants usually do not completely cover the grain of the wood.

Primers are often comparable in price to final paints, and the price is influenced by the quality of the ingredients. Primers for some specialty applications can be expensive.
