Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys Ingots for Remelting and Castings for  General Engineering Purposes IS 617

Chemical Composition: The standard defines the permissible chemical composition for various aluminum alloys, specifying the content of major alloying elements like silicon, copper, magnesium, iron, etc. This ensures the material meets the required properties for specific engineering applications.

Mechanical Properties: The mechanical properties for separately cast test pieces for sand cast, chill cast, and investment cast conditions. For each alloy, mechanical properties are only specified for the commonly used methods of casting and for commonly used tempers. For other processes and tempers mechanical properties shall be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.

Casting Processes:

  • The manufacturer shall exercise adequate in-process controls to ensure that each casting remains free from harmful defects and cracks.
  • The dye penetrant test (see IS 3658) process may be used to detect cracks if required by the purchaser and the standard of acceptance shall be mutually agreed to between the supplier and the purchaser.
  • Radiography/ultrasonic tests may be tested in special cases subject to agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. The details of the test

methods to be used, the frequency of inspection, and the standards of acceptance should based on mutual agreement between the purchaser and manufacturer.

Quality Assurance: requirements for freedom from defects are outlined for both ingots and castings to ensure material integrity and suitability for engineering purposes.

Regarding the BIS Auditing Procedure:

The BIS audit is a detailed conformity assessment that checks on conformity to the IS 617 standard of practices of aluminium and aluminum alloy ingots and castings. These castings are mostly fittings in the auto, aerospace, structures, and power sectors, among other sectors.

Certification to this standard assures the consumers that the aluminum casting products of our client have met essential standards of quality, reliability, and safety.

In the audit process, the company and its entire manufacturing processes were subjected to examination of its procurement of raw materials, methodology of production, quality assurance mechanisms, and the performance of the final product.

BIS works with external auditors to examine a number of management system certification systems. In addition to their expertise, auditors are chosen based on their credentials, work history, and audit training.

Along with other details, auditors confirm the following information during the audit process:

  • Does the company have a solid system in place to identify and update legal and regulatory obligations, including production procedure, machinery list, and equipment used for testing?
  • If the company has identified and maintained current compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • If companies are using these legal requirements as inputs to their processes and keeping an eye on the results of those processes to ensure compliance, for example,
  • Samples are tested at the plant under the relevant Indian standards.
  • Seal samples must be tested independently at a lab approved by the BIS.
  • Whether the business can fulfil its legal and regulatory responsibilities, including high-quality staff proficiency
