Butterfly Valve Specifications According to IS 13095

IS 13095specifies the requirements for metallic body butterfly valves that are typically used in industrial applications to regulate or isolate the flow of liquids, gases, or slurries. The key specifications and features outlined in the standard include -

• Material Requirements: The materials used in the construction of the butterfly valve body and other sub-components such as the disc, stem, and seals, should be strong mechanically and chemically and should be corrosion-resistant and durable. Interconnecting rods can be made of a variety of materials, for example, cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and several types of alloys depending on the applications.

• Dimensional Specifications: IS 13095 focuses on the dimensions of the butterfly valves whereby it covers face-to-face length, valve diameter, flange dimensions, and disc configuration.  These dimensions are quite important to enhance the installation and the fitment as well as performance in piping systems.

• Leakage Performance: This has the condition that there should be no possibility of flow through the valve body whenever the valve is closed. This is done through leakage tests under different pressures so as to see that the seals form a good seal in accordance with the standard.

• End Connections: Butterfly valves include flanged or wafer type of connection systems so as to match the various piping systems and can be installed easily.

• Testing Requirements: They further have to pass the hydraulic test, leakage test, and endurance tests to find out their performance in case of operating conditions and to know whether the design of the valve fulfils the requirement of IS 13095 or not.
