An audit is an important phase in the BIS certification process. We are pleased to inform you that the ERCS team completed a BIS audit for our client in Raipur and Vizag for their product "Ferromanganese and Silicomanganese" in compliance with IS 1171 and IS 1470 under the ISI scheme. As a result, the Bureau of Indian Standards has awarded a BIS license for ferroalloys following IS 1171 and 1470

What is BIS?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is an organization dealing with standards of India and is under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. The main operations of this national standard body include product standardization, certification, and testing.

ISI Scheme

The ISI mark scheme in India means a certification mark under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark which certifies that a product complies with the specifications of standards laid down by the BIS. 

It is mandatory for a few products such as cement, steel products, electronics, etc as per government norms but otherwise is completely optional for most of the products to get an ISI mark certification.

ISI mark stands for a physical standardization mark that represents that the product complies with the quality, safety, and reliability standards provided by ISI standards and BIS. It confirms that production, checking, and quality assurance have been performed in line with authorized norms.

Audited Products :

IS 1171 covers specifications, sampling techniques, and testing procedures for   Ferromanganese. The license can be granted for all the particle sizes of the Ferromanganese specified in the specification and applied by the applicant/licensee, provided that the firm has all the necessary manufacturing and testing facilities for the manufacture and testing of all other particle sizes of the Ferromanganese proposed to be included in the license.

IS 1470 covers Silicomanganese's specifications, sampling technique, and testing procedures. The manufacturer shall maintain test records for the tests carried out to establish conformity. Sample Size according to the product manual is 5Kg (for lab sample, Compliance to Cl 6.1.3 of IS 1472 to be ensured)

Suggestions to Manufacturers :

To obtain BIS certification for the product, the manufacturer must produce a standard quality product that fulfills the Indian Standard Specifications (ISS). The interpretations of the BIS officials are consistent with Indian standards.

Before exporting products within India with the standard ISI mark, all producers must get a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards.

BIS Audit and the Auditing Process : 

An audit is an important step in BIS certification under the FMCS scheme. The BIS officer inspects the factory and the product to be certified.  The BIS inspection should be carried out effectively without the discovery of any of the non-conformities. BIS audits examine several management system certification systems in partnership with external auditors.

  i. Manufacturing process.
ii. List of machinery
iii. Testing equipment 

1. Whether the organization identified and updated the appropriate statutory and regulatory responsibilities. Firms use these legal requirements as process inputs and monitor process outputs to ensure compliance, such as:

i. Samples are tested at the plant according to the applicable Indian standards.

ii. Sealing of the samples for independent testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory.
