What are Agro textile products?

 

Agriculture, with its allied sectors, is the largest livelihood provider in India, which contributes a significant figure to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Textiles in their simplest form have been used in agriculture since the inception of agricultural activities to protect plants against insects, weeds, and extreme climatic conditions as well.

The new field has been created with the combination of textile technology and Agriculture known as Agro Textiles or Agro-tech. These products can be woven, non-woven, or knitted.

 

In major developing countries, particularly Brazil, India, and China, the market potential for agro textiles is huge.

 

Keeping in view the protection of animal and plant health, safety of the environment, and to ensure optimum quality of product, the Bureau of Indian Standards has published, Agro Textiles Quality Control Order, 2022 to bring Agro textiles under mandatory BIS certification.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India that develops and publishes Indian Standards, Implement Conformity Assessment Schemes, recognize & run laboratories for Conformity Assessment, Implement Hallmarking, Works for Consumer empowerment, Conducts capacity-building programs on quality assurance and represent the country in ISO & IEC.

·       Under sections 16, 17, and 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest, and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the Order –

Agro Textiles Quality Control Order, 2022.

 

·       As per this (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Agro textiles are obligated to bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018

 

·       Penalty for contravention. – Any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable in accordance with the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).
