BIS Certification for Cold Formed Welded Carbon Steel Square and Rectangular Hollow Sections for Mechanical IS 18573:2024

Under IS 18573:2024, manufacturers of cold formed welded carbon steel square and rectangular hollow sections must obtain BIS certification.
What Is A Cold Formed Hollow Section?
Cold formed square hollow section (SHS) is Depending on the manufacturing mill, this material has an interior weld seam that is elevated and has a smooth, blue-grey color finish. It is manufactured from a hot rolled coil. What Are Standards For Cold Formed Rectangular Hollow Section?
The Government of India created BIS certification as a crucial foundation to guarantee that only dependable, high-quality items are offered for sale. The BIS Certificate establishes strict criteria and norms for conformity across a broad range of sectors and goods.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has produced IS 18573:2024, which provides a detailed description of the specifications for welded hollow sections that are cold-formed square and rectangular.
This standard includes requirements for dimensions, tolerances, surface protection, mechanical qualities, and materials. In order to preserve the integrity and functionality of the product, this guarantees that producers adhere to strict quality standards. For square and rectangular hollow sections, this standard provides a thorough set of guidelines that cover the necessary materials, mechanical qualities, dimensions, tolerances, and surface protection. The sections are categorized into grades or types, such as YSt 210, YSt 240, YSt 310, and YSt 355; this allows for flexibility to accommodate various engineering needs.
Raw materials used:
The square and rectangular sections of the aforementioned grades may be manufactured using hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel sheets or strips of any appropriate grade to IS 10748, IS 513, or any other comparable specification, unless otherwise specified by the buyer.
Zinc used for coating in hot-dip galvanized sections must adhere to IS 209 or IS 13229. When it comes to Pre-Galvanized sections, the zinc coating of the galvanized sheet or Strip must meet IS 277's criteria for Coatings, which include the Weld Port coating.

The main tests for square and rectangular hollow sections of Cold Formed Welded Carbon Steel for mechanical, general engineering, and decorative applications are listed below :
Fundamentals Of Computation
o For the purpose of the standard, the weights are calculated on the basis that steel weighs 0.785 kg/cm² per meter run. For calculating cross sectional area and weight per unit length, corner radii have been taken into consideration (see Annex B).
Dimensions And Tolerances
o There are some recommended Size, Thickness and Tolerances are given in IS 18573. However, a manufacturer can also declare other dimensions as agreed to between the manufacturer and the purchaser may be supplied.
o Unless specified by the purchaser, square and rectangular carbon steel section shall be supplied in random lengths from 4 m to 7 m. Wherever the exact length requirement is there, it will be subject to agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser.
Side Squareness
o The deviation from squareness of the sides of a square or rectangular hollow section is defined as the difference between 90° and θ
Straightness
o The square and rectangular sections shall be supplied in mill straightened or finished condition. Unless otherwise tolerances are agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer, section shall not deviate from straightness by more than 1/200 of the length, measured at the center of that length for mill straightened condition and 1/600 of the length at the center of that length for finished condition.
