Companies use cans in various industries, including food and beverage, paint, and automotive. They have helped millions of people eat fresher produce and millions of businesses transport their products safely worldwide. Cans come in many shapes and sizes. Recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has produced a new standard, IS 18427: 2024. It is targeted largely at the food and beverage business. IS 18427: 2024 requires manufacturers of three-piece round open-top metal cans for food and beverages to get BIS certification.
In pursuance of Sub-rule (1) of Rule (15) of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards notified that - IS 2034, IS 9396 Part 1, IS 9396 Part 2 are to be withdrawn by 18th January, 2025 and replaced with a single standard IS 18427: 2024 which is established on 18th July, 2024.
Information about above mentioned old Indian Standards is given below -
This standard prescribes the requirements of round open-top containers manufactured from tinplate for packing 200, 400, and 500 g of butter and cheese. For this standard, the definitions given in IS 1394 and the following shall apply.
This Indian Standard ( Part 1 ) ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 24 July 1987, after the draft finalized by the Metal Containers Sectional Committee had been approved by the Marine, Cargo Movement and Packaging Division Council. This Indian Standard, first published in 1979, contained material and other requirements for open-top sanitary cans for thermally processed foods only. It has been revised in two parts, Part 1 covering the tinplate requirements and Part 2 covering the sizes and general requirement* of open-top sanitary ( OTS ) cans.
This Indian Standard (Part 2) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Metal Containers Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council. This standard was first published in 1975 and subsequently revised in 1987. The Committee felt to revise this standard in light of developments in the OTS can manufacturing practices and the experience gained by the processed food industry through the use of these cans.

Three-piece cans, initially invented in the middle of the nineteenth century, are made up of a cylindrical body rolled from a piece of flat metal with a longitudinal seam (typically formed by welding) and two can end seamed to each end of the body.
The three-piece design allows for various easy opening choices and is often produced using less modern gear. Because of their simplicity and adaptability, three-piece cans are frequently utilized in industrial packaging.
The following image demonstrates the difference between a two-piece and a three-piece can:
A three-piece can is comprised of a seamed body with a connected end and lid. A two-piece can is made by shaping a piece of material into a body with an integrated end and then attaching a seamed lid to shut the can.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certifies that certain goods meet minimal safety criteria before being marketed in India, safeguarding customers against defective or inferior products. Some products, related to the food and beverages industry, electrical goods, electronic equipment, etc. must acquire this certificate before being used or sold in India.
The procedure begins with producers submitting their applications and supporting paperwork before samples are sent for testing at recognized laboratories throughout India – after which they will obtain a certificate if all tests are passed successfully.
