What is aluminium and aluminium alloy ?

Aluminium is a silvery-white, lightweight metal. It is soft and malleable. Uses. Aluminium is used in a huge variety of products including cans, foils, kitchen utensils, window frames, beer kegs and aeroplane parts. This is because of its particular properties.

Aluminum alloy (or aluminum alloy; see spelling differences) is an alloy in which aluminum (Al) is the predominant metal. Typical alloying elements are copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon, tin, nickel and zinc. There are two basic classifications, namely casting alloys and forming alloys, both of which are further divided into heat treatable and non-heat treatable categories. About 85% of aluminum is used for formed products, such as rolled sheets, foils and extrusions. Cast aluminum alloys provide cost-effective products due to their low melting point, although they generally have a lower tensile strength than wrought alloys. The most important cast aluminum alloy system is Al-Si, where the high silicon content (4-13%) contributes to good casting properties. Aluminum alloys are widely used in engineering structures and components where light weight or corrosion resistance is required.

Aluminium Sector in India :

·       Aluminum is the second most used metal in the world after steel with an annual consumption of approximately 65 million tonnes (including scrap). It is also the fastest growing metal which has grown by nearly 20 times in the last sixty years (compared to 6 to 7 times for other metals).

·       India is the fourth largest producer of aluminium in the world with a share of around 5.3% of the global aluminium output. It has nearly 10% of the world’s bauxite reserves and a growing aluminium sector that leverages this.

·       India also holds a fair advantage in cost of production and conversion costs in alumina. Moreover, rise in infrastructure development and automotive production are encouraging development in this sector within the country.

·       The Indian aluminium industry mainly consists of - primary aluminium, aluminium extrusions, aluminium rolled products and alumina chemicals. The industry meets the requirements of a wide range of industries including engineering, electrical and electronics, automobile and automobile components, etc. The principal user segment of the aluminium industry in India continues to be the electrical and electronics sector followed by automotive, transportation, building, construction, packaging, consumer durables, industrial and defence.

What is BIS ?

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India which develops and publishes Indian Standards, Implement Conformity Assessment Schemes, Recognise & run laboratories for Conformity Assessment, Implement Hallmarking, Work for Consumer empowerment, Conduct capacity building programs on quality assurance and represent the country in ISO & IEC.

ISI mark certification for Aluminium and aluminium alloys :

·       Under section 16, 17 and 25 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government (Ministry of Mines) is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the Order –

Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

·       As per this (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy are obligated to bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the Bureau in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018

For  the specification and performance requirements, the Bureau of Indian Standards has developed standards for Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys, which are listed below:

·       IS 617 : 1994  -   Cast Aluminium and its alloys – Ingots and castings for general engineering purpose.

·       IS 11890 : 1987 – Specification for high purity primary aluminium ingot for remelting for special applications.

·       IS 6754 : 1972 – Specification for aluminium alloy ingots for remelting for general engineering purpose.

·       IS 2590 : 1987 – Specification for primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purpose.

·       IS 4026 : 2007 – Aluminium ingots billets and wire bars (Electrical Conductor Grade)
