About Nickel:
Nickel
is a non-ferrous metal mainly used for manufacturing non-
corrosive materials such as stainless steel. It is
a naturally occurring,
lustrous, silvery-white metal and is the fifth most
abundant element by
weight that occurs extensively in the earth's
crust. Nickel is mined and
refined across 25 countries in the world, however,
the top 5 countries
account for more than 60% of the world’s mine
reserve as well as
production.
Some
of the key characteristics of nickel are its high melting point,
resistance against corrosion & oxidation,
ductility and catalytical
properties. These properties of the metal make it
suitable for
electroplating and formation of alloys.
Manufacturing of stainless steel consumes almost 75-78% of nickelproduced. Duplex and Austentic Stainless Steel have
the highest nickelcontent.
Nickel Production in India :
Nickel demand in India is around 45,000 tonnes. In
India, Nickel occurs as oxides, sulphides and silicates. It is found as oxide
in Odisha which has 93% of the India’snickel resources. In Jharkhand, nickel is found
along with copper and uranium deposits. However the exact extractable
amount of
nickel reserves is uncertain.Nickel is also produced
as a by-product of copper mining, as in the Ghatsila area of Jharkhand where nickel
occurs insmall quantities in the copper sulphide ore.
Primarily World nickel demand is for theproduction of stainless steel where about 70% nickelis consumed. Nickel accounts for 10 to 20% input
cost in stainless steel production depending on thenickel content. The future outlook for nickel dependsmainly on the production of stainless steel which isone of the main drivers for nickel produced.
Batteriesand the ongoing Electric Vehicle revolution couldprove to be a transformational event as NCA andNCM,
one still predominantly used. However, Li-ion
technology is gaining in popularity and
increasinglyby getting established as the battery of choice.
India mostly
dependson the imports for nickel till a technology to recovernickel from the overburden of chromite ore in Odisha
is established on a commercial scale. The process developed by HCL for the
production of primary nickel from waste generatedduring copper refining will be a breakthrough in the area of nickel
production in the country.
What is BIS ?
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India which develops and publishes Indian Standards, Implement Conformity Assessment Schemes, Recognise & run laboratories for Conformity Assessment, Implement Hallmarking, Work for Consumer empowerment, Conduct capacity building programs on quality assurance and represent the country in ISO & IEC.
ISI mark certification for Nickel Powder :
· Under section 16, 17 and 25 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government (Ministry of Mines) is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the Order –
Nickel (Quality Control) Order, 2023.
· As per this (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Nickel are obligated to bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the Bureau in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
For the specification and performance requirements, the Bureau of Indian Standards has developed standards for Nickel Powder, which are listed below:
· IS 7506 : 1987 - Specification for Nickel Powder
