BIS Certification for Steel Balls for Rolling Bearings as per IS 2898 Part-1

Steel balls are a decisive factor in rolling bearings' performance and longevity. They are inherent parts of most industrial and automobile applications. IS 2898 (Part 1) is an Indian standard that specifies the technical specifications, material specifications, and testing procedures for steel balls for rolling bearings. ISI mark certification for steel balls ensures that the manufacturers of steel balls make high-quality steel balls with accurate dimensions, hardness levels, and surface finish requirements.

Overview Of Steel Balls for Rolling Bearings

Steel balls are critical elements in the structure and operation of rolling bearings; they are widely applied in mechanical and industrial uses. The steel balls for rolling bearings are crucial in mitigating friction, promoting smooth rotational motion, and facilitating load-bearing. The Indian Standard IS 2898 highlights the requirement for a steel ball in a rolling bearing. This is critical for manufacturers and users to guarantee the balls' durability, quality, safety, and performance.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has not officially published the product's draft, but it will be published soon by the authority. IS 2898 (Part 1) in the Indian Standard provides technical details, procedures for quality control of steel balls for rolling bearings, material standards, and size. It also addresses the inspection and testing procedure, which ensures the steel balls conform to the desired performance requirements. Let’s delve deeper into the article Steel Balls for Rolling Bearings IS 2898 (Part 1) to know more:

Tests Under Steel Balls for Rolling Bearings

Know the test parameters for steel bearings? Let's check:

The diameter of the ball must be determined by comparative measurement using master balls.

1. All the comparative measurements must be conducted with instrument and gauging methods that provide accuracy with one-fifth of the standard tolerance of the ball or within 0.05 microns, whichever is larger.

2. The master ball must be of suitable steel with a hardness of 64 HRC or higher. There is a permissible diameter variation of one-tenth diameter tolerance per ball applicable to a particular grade or 0.05 microns, whichever is larger.

3. The calibrated diameter of the master ball must be defined as the average of at least twenty randomly oriented diameter readings. This measurement must be an accuracy within plus or minus the magnitude of the diameter variation of the master ball, or ±0.08 microns.

4. The material used for gauge contact must have a hardness equivalent to greater than the ball being measured. All gauge contacts must be flat or have a convex curvature with a radius of at least 3 mm.

5. The gauge pressure and temperature must be maintained consistently for both the master ball and the ball being tested. If the ball under test is made from a different material than the master ball.

6. All measurements of diameter and tolerances shall be based on 10 random orientation measurements taken from each ball in the sample.

7. Deviation to basic diameter tolerance shall be established by taking all individual die meter readings of balls selected from the supply.

8. Tolerances to deviation and variation for various grades of balls shall be as specified.

9. The surface roughness conditions, wherever specified, shall be as specified.

10. Deviation from Spherical Form: The procedure specified in Appendix A shall be adopted.

11. The crushing load will be found by placing one ball between two other balls and subjecting them to a gradually increased load until the ball is broken.

12. The test procedure involves suspending three balls in contact with one another in a pair of V guides and suspending the balls vertically under an appropriate loading machine. The gentle pressure will keep the balls upright in place.

13. The V-guides would be removed afterward, and the load slowly increased in steps of 1,960 to 5,880 N/sec until the ball was crushed.

14. The load level recorded at that stage shall be read again as the crushing load and finally be less than the stated values for the corresponding size ball.

Essential Benefits of Obtaining ISI Mark For Steel Balls For Rolling Bearings

Here are some of the benefits you can get if you obtain ISI mark certificates:

  • Regulatory Quality Assurance: The ISI mark signifies the quality level prescribed by the government to ensure compliance and reliability.
  • Compulsory Compliances: Steel balls for rolling bearings IS 2898 (Part 1) are required to obtain the ISI mark. Failure in the process can lead to penalties, such as the seizure of materials and huge fines.
  • Increased Market Competitiveness: Certification makes your product highly competitive in the market.
  • Consumer Trust: Customers are more inclined to buy ISI-certified products since they assure safety and quality. The certification ensures trust and confidence among consumers.
  • Market Benchmarking: Associating with a well-known brand enables you to raise industry standards and set a benchmark for the market value of your product.

Key Specifications & Requirements of IS 2898

1. Material Requirements: The steel balls used in rolling must be made of high-quality steel that exhibits excellent hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. The commonly utilized material for these balls is chrome steel. The standard outlines the minimum material properties, which include hardness and tensile strength, to ensure durability and reliability during bearing operations.

2. Hardness Requirements: Steel balls must meet the hardness requirements, which ensure that they can withstand load and operational stresses encountered in rolling bearings. The hardness is tested using the Rockwell C scale. This standard defines the minimum and maximum hardness values.

3. Surface Finish: A satisfactory surface finish is imperative to the performance and life of rolling bearings. The steel balls should not contain any defects, including cracks, pits, or inclusions, that may affect their function. IS 2898 (Part 1) establishes the limits on the surface roughness, which are important to minimize friction and avoid early wear in service.

4. Inspection and Testing: IS 2898 (Part 1) also stipulates various inspection and testing procedures to ensure steel balls comply. They include visual examination, dimension checks, hardness tests, and tests for the surface finish. Metallurgical tests, including microstructure examination, may also be performed to ensure that the steel employed for the balls has the required properties.
