Introduction to Indian Standard IS 16090 : 2013; Geosynthetics Geotextiles (or cushioning) materials -textiles used as protection
· IS 16090 : 2013 cover Geosynthetics Geotextiles (or cushioning) materials -textiles used as protection.
· This standard specifies requirements for needle punched non-woven geo-textiles used as protection (or cushioning) materials adjacent to (above and/or below) a geo-membrane to protect it from construction and operational damage in typical applications including solid waste landfills and liquid impoundments with varying load, sub-grade and cover sub-grade soil conditions.
· This standard covers physical, mechanical and endurance properties that must be met, or exceeded by the geo-textile.
· This is a material purchasing specification and design review of its use for intended applications is recommended. This is not a construction or design specification. Protection (cushioning) of geomembranes is a site specific design issue which should be addressed by the engineers responsible for the site design.
· This standard is based on the minimum requirements of the geo-textile to provide tensile reinforcement and survivability from installation stress. In general, the geo-textile shall be placed at the proper elevation, location and orientation as detailed on the plans and specification.
· The design, installation and construction guidelines for such geo-textiles are being published as a separate Indian Standard.
· IS 16090 : 2013 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Geosynthetics Geotextiles (or cushioning) materials -textiles used as protection as follows :

(ii) Trapezoidal Tear Strength
(iii) CBR Puncture Resistance
(iv) Maximum UV resistance
(v) Average thickness at a near 2 kPa

1. Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Geosynthetics Geotextiles (or cushioning) materials -textiles used as protection (IS 16090 : 2013)
· In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following Order, namely
Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022.
· As per the Geo Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Geosynthetics Geotextiles (or cushioning) materials -textiles used as protection are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
