BIS CERTIFICATION OF LIGHTERS IS 9994:2018

1.   Introduction to Indian Standard IS 9994; Lighters

·       IS 9994 cover Lighters. This standard specifies the manufacturing, chemical and physical requirements and testing of Lighters.

·       IS 9994 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Lighters as follows

(i)           Flame Generation

(ii)        Flame Heights  

(iii)       Flame  Extinction

(iv)       Volumetric displacement

(v)         Mass of fuel

(vi)       Compatibility with fuel

(vii)     Resistance to fuel loss

(viii)    Resistance to dropping

(ix)       Resistance to internal Pressure

(x)         Resistance to Continuous Burning, etc

2.   Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Lighters (IS 9994) :

·       Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Quality control order.

·       As per the Quality control order, all the manufacturers of Lighters are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.

5.   Requisites to get the BIS license for Lighters
