ISI Certification (BIS) for
Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement IS 16993 : 2018 in India

Microfine cement is a type of portland cement that contains ultrafine particles and is used to inject into loose soils, rocks, and concrete.

As a grout, it has excellent permeability, strength and durability properties. Because of its small particle size, microfine cement easily penetrates into tight joints, fissures, and pore spaces, to provide a water-tight grouted rock or soil mass. After adding a water-reducing agent, it can be utilized as a grouting material. As  a grouting material it is composed of microfine particles with a specific surface area of >800m²/kg.

Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement is used in the following areas –

· Rock Injection: tunnels, caverns etc., as pre- or post-stabilization injection.

· Fixation and water scaling in fractured zone during tunnel construction. Water sealing of tunnel walls.

· Soil Injection: preventing soil liquefaction stabilization, water tightness, etc.

· Underground oil storage facilities: Ensuring leak tightness of retention dikes around oil tank.

Introduction to Indian Standard IS 16993 Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement

· IS 16993 cover Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement. This standard covers the manufacture and chemical and physical requirements for microfine ordinary Portland cement.  This standard also covers requirements for microfine sulphate resisting Portland cement.

· IS 16993 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement as follows.

(i) Bleeding Test

(ii) Loss of ignition

(iii) Particle size

(iv) Setting time

(v) Soundness

(vi) Fitness

· Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Cement (Quality control) order.

· As per the Cement (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Microfine Ordinary Portland Cement are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
