Radial tyres were developed in 1946. There was a need for more flexible tyres, which were able to absorb shocks generated by road surfaces. Because cord plies are placed directly on top of each other, the side walls of radial tyres remain very flexible. Diagonal tyres have been used instead of solid rubber tyres since 1898. They were a standard feature in the car industry before radial tyres were introduced. Diagonal tyres consist of casing layers made from nylon cord. They are placed diagonally across each other in the tread and the side walls, at an angle of 55 degrees. Diagonal tyres are used, for example, to perform activities in ports, often on reach stackers

• IS 15633 cover Automotive Vehicles-Pneumatic Tyres for Passenger Car Vehicles– Diagonal and Radial Ply. This standard specifies the general, dimensional and performance requirements of new diagonal and radial ply pneumatic tyres designed primarily for vehicles in categories M1, T1 and T2. However, it does not apply to run flat tyres, and tyres designed for:

1. a) The equipment of vintage cars, and
2. b) Competitions (racings)

• Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industrial Policy and Promotion(LR Section) after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Pneumatic Tyres and Tubes for Automotive Vehicles  (Quality control) order, 2009
• As per this Quality control order, allthe manufacturers of Automotive Vehicles-Pneumatic Tyres for Passenger Car Vehicles– Diagonal and Radial Ply are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
