ISI Certification (BIS) for
Rapid Hardening Portland Cement IS 8041:1990 in India

Rapid hardening cement is a special type of cement that achieves high strength in less time. It is also called as High-Early Strength Portland Cement.

In this cement, lime stone and shale are used as raw material and heated at extremely high temperature to form clinkers. The lime and shale clinker is then mixed with small amount of gypsum and grinded very finely to form rapid hardening cement.

Rapid hardening Portland cement is used in the following areas –

· Where formwork has to be removed as early as possible in order to reuse it.

· Generally used for constructing road pavements, where it is important to open the road to traffic quickly.

· It is used in industries which manufacture concrete products like slabs, posts, electric poles, block fence, etc. because moulds can be released quickly.

Introduction to Indian Standard IS 8041 Rapid hardening Portland cement

· IS 8041 cover Rapid hardening Portland cement. This standard covers the manufacture and chemical and physical requirements of rapid hardening Portland cement.

NOTE - The term `rapid hardening should not be confused with  quick-setting.

· IS 8041 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Rapid hardening Portland cement as follows

(i) Insoluble Residue

(ii) Loss of ignition

(iii) Fineness

(iv) Setting time

Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Rapid hardening Portland cement (IS 8041) :

· Under section 14 of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade after consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued the Cement (Quality control) order.

· As per the Cement (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers of Rapid hardening Portland cement are obligated to obtain ISI Mark Certification.
