Introduction to Indian Standard IS 15748; Textiles - Protective clothing for

Industrial workers exposed to heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’ clothing)

IS 15748 cover Textiles - Protective clothing for Industrial workers

This Indian Standard (First Revision) which is identical with ISO 11612 :

2015 'Protective clothing- Clothing to protect against heat and flame-

Minimum performance requirements' issued by the International

Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of

Indian Standards on recommendation of the Textiles Protective Clothing

Sectional Committee and approval of the Textiles Division Council.

IS 15748 specifies the quality parameters or characteristics of the Textiles

- Protective clothing for Industrial workers exposed to heat (excluding

firefighters’ and welders’ clothing) as follows :

(i) Size designation and fit

(ii) Pockets and Closures

(iii) Heat Resistance at a temp. of 180±5*C

(iv) Leather Chromium VI Content

(v) Limited Flame spread

(vi) Dimensional change of textiles materials

(vii) Radiant Heat

(viii) Tensile strength

(ix) Burst Strength for knitting material and seams

(x) Convective heat

(xi) Tear Resistance

(xii) Seam Strength

(xiii) Molten Iron Splash

(xiv) Contact heat and others

1. Mandate for ISI Mark Certification of Textiles - Protective clothing for

Industrial workers exposed to heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’

clothing) (IS 15748)

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section

16 read with section 17 and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of

Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the

opinion that it is necessary so to do in the public interest and after

consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards, hereby makes the following

Order, namely

Protective Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2022.

As per the Protective Textiles (Quality control) order, all the manufacturers

of Textiles - Protective clothing for Industrial workers exposed to

heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’ clothing) are obligated to

obtain ISI Mark Certification.

2. Types of Textiles - Protective clothing for Industrial workers exposed to

heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’ clothing) covered under IS 15748

Licence is granted to use Standard Mark as per IS 15748 with the following

scope:

Types / Grades / Variety With/Without additional protective

Limited – A1 or A1 + A2

Convective Heat – B1, B2, B3

Radiant Heat – C1, C2, C3, C4

Molten Aluminum splash – D1, D2, D3

Molten Iron Splash – E1, E2, E3

Contact Heat – F1, F2, F3

3. Procedure to obtain BIS Certification of Textiles - Protective clothing for

Industrial workers exposed to heat (excluding firefighters’ and welders’

In the certification process, product testing is the most important stage as it

determines whether the quality of the product meets Indian standards.

For the same purpose, investments in testing facilities are required to install test

equipment for internal factory test laboratories.

pay/reimbursement for a Pre-Visit at your Factory Premises to ensure the

conformity of your product as per the relevant Indian Standard & BIS guidelines

for its BIS certification.
