One of the most frequently used commodities in India is steel, which is utilized in a variety of industries including manufacturing, transportation, and construction. As a consequence, it is crucial to guarantee the quality and safety of steel goods, which is where BIS (ISI) certification comes into play.
Similar to the various segments of the major industries, Steel and Steel products are subjected to regulatory compliance under the ambit of the Indian Government by a wing so-called the Ministry of Steel. It publishes a Steel Quality Control Order-2020 order which depicts the regulatory compliance requirement for Steel and Steel products enforcing all the stakeholders to comply with the Indian Standards Specifications and simultaneously get an approval mark like the ISI mark by the National Standardization body of India which is known as the BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS (BIS). The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution currently oversees BIS, which was once India's largest Third-Party Inspection organization. BIS have different Schemes to approve the various product categories. Steel and Steel products come under the ambit of Scheme-I (a.k.a. Product Certification Scheme) of BIS (Conformity Assessment Rules and Regulations 2018, Schedule-II enacted by the BIS Act 2016).
There are various kinds of Steel and Steel products or their Indian Standards mandatory to carry the ISI mark to signify their compliance with their relevant Indian Standards to ensure the quality of the product and provide traceability directly to the manufacturer of the particular product.
Depending upon the type, form, and application of steel, a plethora of Indian Standards are formulated with the help of all the stakeholders and the pioneer of the relevant Steel Industries. For example, IS 6911 covers a huge variety and grades of Stainless Steel in the form of Sheets, Plates, and Strips Coil commonly used for heat-resisting applications while some similar grades are covered under IS 5522 and IS 15997 for the manufacture of Utensils. You can also check the list of Steel and Steel products mandatory for BIS certification on the official website of BIS.
Under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a national standards organisation. Obtaining BIS (ISI) certification from BIS certifies a product as meeting the required requirements for quality, safety, and dependability. In India, structural steel, reinforcing steel bars (often referred to as TMT bars), steel plates, and steel pipes all need this certification.
Providing for the safety and dependability of steel goods is the main goal of BIS (ISI) certification. Steel is employed in crucial areas including building, infrastructure, and transportation where a component's failure might have dire repercussions. Consumers and regulatory bodies may be certain that the steel goods they are purchasing are of the highest quality and adhere to the established requirements thanks to BIS (ISI) certification.
These are some of the many advantages of BIS (ISI) certification for steel products:
Quality Assurance: BIS (ISI) certification offers customers and regulatory bodies the reassurance that the steel product satisfies the established criteria of safety, dependability, and quality.
Compliance with Regulations: Many steel products in India need BIS (ISI) certification. Manufacturers may comply with legal standards and stay out of trouble by being certified.
Competitive Advantage: BIS (ISI) certification gives producers a competitive edge since it proves that their goods are of the highest calibre.
Improved Customer Confidence: BIS (ISI) certification promotes consumer faith in the reliability and security of steel goods, boosting sales and fostering stronger relationships with consumers.
To sum up, BIS (ISI) certification is necessary to guarantee the dependability and safety of steel goods in India. There are various processes in the certification process, including testing, auditing, and awarding of certification. The BIS (ISI) certification offers a number of advantages, including quality assurance, regulatory compliance, a competitive edge, and greater customer trust. To guarantee that their goods meet the highest requirements for quality and safety, steel product manufacturers should receive BIS (ISI) certification.

After grant of licence to the manufacturer, BIS can do surprise factory surveillance inspections through visit to the factory by certification officers of BIS or by personnel of the Agents appointed by BIS as per Rule 33 of BIS Rules, 2018. BIS will verify that manufacturer continues to maintain the manufacturing infrastructure, process controls, quality control and testing formalities and conformity of the product to the applicable Indian Standard. Testing of the product samples in factory is also witnessed during the inspection. Sample of ISI marked product is also drawn from the factory for verification of conformity to relevant ISS through third party laboratory testing. BIS also carries out market surveillance through purchase of samples of ISI marked product for verification of conformity of the product to relevant ISS through third party laboratory testing of the product.
BIS licensee is required to inform BIS that they are shifting the factory location to a new address with relevant documents for the new premises similar to the documents submitted at the time of applying to BIS for grant of licence. The licensee can suspend the use of the Standard Mark under intimation to the Bureau on relocation of factory location to new location. The revocation of suspension may be done by the Bureau after verification of the old premises and verification of production process at new premises as per provision of paragraph 11 (3) & (4) of scheme I of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
